Zoo Explorers (ages 6 - 8)educator with biofact
Come have fun while learning more about our world and the animals in it!  This exciting hour-long program is designed for children 6-8 years old, who have moved on from the adult/child pairs of our pre-school programs.  Spend some time in the classroom exploring biofacts and other activities, and then head outside to learn more about adaptations, niches and behaviors through Zoo exploration.

Class size, 8 min. - 12 max.

Children must be accompanied by an adult.  No younger or older siblings please.

Members: $14 per child / Non-members: $20 per child

Elephants

Have you ever seen an elephant fly?  At almost 10,000 pounds each, our three elephants would need even larger ears to get off the ground.  Even though they really won’t fly, we can still watch them flap their ears to cool off.

Red Wolves

Howl with me, OOOOOWWWWooooooooo!!  Do you know what it means to rally, or what an invitation to play looks like? During this lesson we will act out different wolf behaviors!

Gibbon

Sing out loud...They swing through the trees with the greatest of ease, because of brachiation and ability to grab onto things… ok my song isn’t that cool, but gibbons are!  Learn all about what makes this ape special.

Tamarins

Look, over there!!  Oh, there is another one, and another, and another…  Can you imagine being in a community that spends its time jumping from branch to branch?  You won’t have to imagine when you visit the Cotton Tops among the trees.

Insects vs. Spiders

Which one has six legs?  Who has three body parts?  Which one can fly?  Some things about Insects and Spiders are very different, while some things are similar.  Find out what makes them different, and what they may have in common.

Wild Art! (ages 6 - 12)
kids with artworkJoin local artist Megan Cortesi in creating beautiful pieces of animal art.  Megan, whose illustrations can be seen on the Zoo’s wetlands trail, will lead drawing lessons designed to cultivate new skills and sharpen old ones while having fun and learning about zoo animals!  Students will leave the class with a completed drawing featuring the animal of that month’s theme.

Roots & Shoots logoRoots & Shoots (ages 9 - 12)

Roots and Shoots is an exciting program founded by Dr. Jane Goodall in 1991.  Its mission is to guide young people in taking action on issues that they feel are important.  Care and concern for the human community, the environment and animals are the goals of the activities at each meeting.
